Subject: Excessive Snow Accumulation and Structural Risks
Attention North Grenville Residents,
The Municipality of North Grenville is advising property owners, businesses, and farmers to be aware of the risks associated with excessive snow accumulation on buildings and structures. Recent structural collapses across Ontario highlight the potential dangers of heavy snow loads, particularly when combined with rain or fluctuating temperatures.
Key Risks & Safety Measures:
✅ Monitor Snow Accumulation: Regularly inspect and safely remove excess snow from roofs and elevated structures.
✅ Recognize Warning Signs: Watch for sagging roofs, cracks in walls, difficulty opening doors or windows, and unusual creaking noises.
✅ Prioritize Safety: Avoid working alone when clearing snow and consider hiring a professional for difficult or high-risk areas.
✅ Clear Drainage Areas: Keep vents, chimneys, and emergency exits clear of snow and ice to prevent hazards such as carbon monoxide buildup.
✅ Be Aware of Changing Conditions: Rainfall on accumulated snow significantly increases the weight and stress on structures.
Who is Most at Risk?
- Commercial and industrial buildings with large, flat roofs.
- Agricultural structures such as barns and storage buildings.
- Multi-level parking structures and other exposed elevated surfaces.
- Older buildings or those not designed to withstand heavy snow loads.
If you have concerns about the structural integrity of your property, consult a qualified professional.
