The story of Drifters Outdoors began with George and Genny, a determined couple who started their journey as instructor trainers for the Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association (ORCKA). Their extensive experience and love for the water led them to accumulate a surplus of boats over time.
Rather than letting these boats sit unused, George and Genny saw a unique opportunity. They decided to turn this surplus into a source of income, which sparked the initial idea of renting out their boats. With a clear vision in mind, they navigated the necessary legal and regulatory processes, obtaining permits from Parks Canada. Securing the right to operate their business marked the official beginning of Drifters Outdoors, a venture that allowed them to share their passion for paddling with others while also creating a sustainable business.
Drifters Outdoors offers a range of core services, including daily rentals of canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards (SUP) from 9 AM to 6 PM. In addition to equipment rentals, they provide individual, and group lessons designed to ensure everyone is well-prepared and safe on the water. Among these lessons is the specialized one-on-one Kayak T-Rescue training, where participants learn critical rescue techniques. In this scenario, the swimmer alerts the rescuer, and together they skillfully reorient and stabilize the boats, ensuring a safe re-entry into the water. Over the years, Drifters Outdoors has refined its services, focusing on meeting the essential needs of their customers with expert guidance and essential safety gear.
Many customers arrive with their own unique challenges, but Genny and George maintain a positive attitude. They go above and beyond to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone, even if it means spending extra time helping first-time paddlers. If customers are nervous, they offer calming reassurance and ensure they are comfortable and well-adjusted in their boat. They provide clear instructions on how to paddle and navigate straight. If a customer is unhappy with their initial boat choice, such as a touring kayak, they readily switch to a larger, more stable recreational kayak. Additionally, they frequently maintain the kayaks to ensure all equipment is up-to-date and safe.
Among the best stories customers share is their love for the quietness of the river and the variety of wildlife. The peaceful environment along the scenic Kemptville Creek, as it winds its way through North Grenville, is unmatched. Formerly known as the South Branch of the Rideau River, Kemptville Creek offers tranquility and a picturesque countryside view, making it a favorite for outdoor enthusiasts.
"Everyone on the river is very polite, creating a pleasant and respectful atmosphere," George said, quoting one of his recent customers. Whether it's a leisurely paddle in a kayak or a more adventurous canoe trip from Bishops Mills to Oxford Mills, visitors are treated to stunning views and a chance to connect with nature.
In addition to the breathtaking scenery, the creek is a haven for wildlife, with customers frequently spotting various birds, fish, and other creatures that call this area home. Kemptville Creek's clean water is maintained to high standards, with regular testing conducted by the clean water authority a couple of times a week.
Most of Drifters Outdoors' customers are travelers from all over the world—England, Spain, Portugal, and many other places. They also attract numerous visitors from nearby areas such as Winchester, Osgood, Brockville, Barrhaven, and Ottawa. This diverse clientele is largely the result of word-of-mouth recommendations and positive reviews on Google. George and Genny are very grateful for this widespread support.
Drifters Outdoors also features a serene on-site yoga studio, offering a range of classes to suit various preferences. Whether you're looking for an invigorating session with power yoga, a more relaxed approach with gentle power yoga, or a unique bonding experience with power baby yoga, there's something for everyone. For those who prefer a more personalized experience, private classes are available in the studio and the comfort of your home. All classes are led by Genny, a certified and experienced yoga instructor who guides your wellness journey.
Looking to the future, George and Genny plan to introduce fishing kayaks as a new service, catering to the interests of anglers and expanding their offerings.
Through perseverance and adaptability, George and Genny have transformed Drifters Outdoors into a thriving business, overcoming numerous obstacles to achieve their dream of sharing their love for water activities with others.
