Helen's Sewing Room, located in downtown Kemptville, Ontario, has been a staple in the sewing and alterations industry for over two decades. The store is named after its owner, Helen Rice, who boasts an impressive 63 years of experience in the field. On July 31st, the day of our interview, Helen celebrated her 81st birthday. She moved from Almonte to Kemptville to be closer to her daughter Nancy and has always been passionate about sewing and creating. The business started in a garage and had since expanded to a charming downtown location with a bay window at the front. It is now a thriving mother-daughter enterprise.
Renowned for its expert sewing services and alterations, Helen's Sewing Room offers professional tailoring for bridal and prom attire, canvas work, and handmade quilts. With a broad smile, Helen proudly stated, "Whatever we make, we sell." They also provide services for the local police, ambulance, and fire departments.
Despite their busy schedules, Helen and Nancy make time for charitable contributions. In 2020, they were part of a team that sewed 200 scrub sets for the Royal Liverpool Hospital. They have also donated products for various fundraisers. "Word of mouth worked for us," Nancy shared. "People come into the shop because of the donations and giveaways."
The exceptional quality of their work is evident in the glowing reviews from their customers.
